If you have a new puppy, you understand the frustration of finding pee on the carpet in your house. Just when you think your new puppy understand that they should pee outside, you find another wet reminder that your puppy doesn’t understand.

What does it take to break your puppy of the habit of peeing inside?

The truth is, the training routine for housebreaking your puppy is a team effort. The most effective method to housebreak your puppy is to establish a standard routine for you and your puppy. Just like resolutions in the new year, it’s easy to start a routine and quickly watch it die. Establishing and maintaining a routine with your puppy is the most important factor in getting your puppy potty trained. It is also important to get your entire family to use the same exact routine so your puppy doesn’t get confused.

Routine potty trips outside should include:

First thing in the morning Right before bed time Right after every nap A few minutes after each meal

It is easy to start a routine, but sticking with it for several weeks is the challenge. This is where most housetraining efforts fail. It takes anywhere from 15 to 30 days of repetitive action to make a routine a habit. Once the action of taking your new puppy outside to potty, your routine will become a habit. The best part is - once it becomes a habit for your puppy, they will let you know when it’s time to go out. That’s the holy grail of potty training your puppy.

Remember to always praise and reward your puppy when he uses the potty outside. They will relate that to a pleasurable memory because they get attention (which they love) or they get a treat (which they really love). Incorporating praise and treats will help to establish the proper behavior in your puppy and make potty training much easier.
