Josh V Writes:
I just wanted to ask you if you could give me a few pointers that I could send on to my family because we just got a 6week old Border collie today (Tuesday)
and I’m leaving for Toronto tomorrow morning. She is quite the energetic dog and it seems like my parents haven’t really looked too much into detail about
how to raise a puppy. I was just wondering if you could send a few pointers my way??
Answer:
Hey Josh. I’ve just listed random points as there are many to consider:
A. Never let the pup out of your sight. The longer the pup is doing something that you do not want him doing, the harder it will be to put a stop to the
behavior.
B. Do not swamp it with toys. If there are always toys lying around, your pup will get bored of them and start looking for something else (furniture) to
chew on.
C. You might want to think of buying a crate for the dog. (Night time, quiet time, anytime the dog is sleeping he should sleep in the crate. (After meals,
pups will usually want to sleep)
D. When I brought Luther home, something that worked great for me was keeping him on a leash for the first three months. By doing this, you constantly know
where your dog is, and you can monitor, his every move, therefore catching unwanted behavior and putting an immediate stop to it.
For house braking:
I am assuming that you have a house and will be therefore wanting to teach your dog to go to the bathroom in the yard:
Instead of plastering the floor with newspaper and rewarding the dog when he goes on the paper, just get whomever is watching him to take him outside every
30 mins. to one hour. (immediately after eating, or drinking.)
By rewarding the dog for going to the bathroom on paper, you are confusing him. You are teaching him that it is ok to go on newspaper and as well as outside.
For a dog that is a lot of info, just choose the yard method, it’ll save you time in the end.
Most important thing of all:
Do not punish your dog for something that he does not know is wrong! Bad habit to get into.
I know having a pup can be very frustrating at times, remember they do not know what is right and what is wrong, therefore just be patient and attentive.
Praise your dog when he does something worth being praised for, eg. bathroom outside, being quiet in his crate.
If you need to punish your pup one very effective way to do this is:
Place one hand over the muzzle and the other over the back of the neck. This mimics the mother grabbing the pup. Gently exert pressure while uttering “no”
in a meaningful voice.
Make sure the pup is exercised a lot! Border Collies are a very energetic dog and need to have some release or they will go crazy!
Good luck, give your parents my email, they can email me anytime.
Josh V Writes:
One more question: if she starts biting stuff like the blanket or whatever, how should we discipline her?? Thanks again.
See ya.
Answer:
One little trick that you can use is to:
scent discriminate between what she can mess with and what she cant.
To do this, just put a little dab of vanilla extract on all her toys. Over time with constant supervision, she will learn to deferintiate between what she
can mess with and what she can’t by the scent.
If she bites anything you do not want her to bite, punish her in the same way, immediately using the above method.

Here are 6 tips to choosing the best puppy food for your new companion!
1. The simple truth is, if a dog food is high quality and all natural you don’t need to feed a puppy food. Choose a food that is formulated according to the nutritional profiles of AAFCO (American Association of Feed Control Officials) for ALL stages of life.
2. Always look for a good source of protein listed in the first 5 ingredients. The two best sources of protein are chicken meal and catfish. Most people don’t realize it but chicken meal has much more protein in it than regular chicken does because all the water has been removed. So chicken meal would be the best choice. Catfish is also a good protein source and has essential oils in it.
3. Just like humans, a puppy needs vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in their food. Good nutrition is essential to a puppy and what they receive in their first year can set the stage for their entire life. It’s also a great idea to give a nutritional supplement along with their food.
4. Remember to stay away from any food with corn, wheat, glutens, dairy or soy. These ingredients can be very hard to digest. A puppy food can say all natural and sound like a great food for your puppy (corn and wheat are indeed natural) but just because it’s natural doesn’t mean it’s necessarily good for them. Dogs can become allergic to grains like corn and wheat, so starting them off on these grains is not a good idea.
5.NO, NO chemical preservatives! There are chemical preservatives in so much food today and it is actually a “toxin” to the body. Foods with BHA, BHT and ethoxoquin should be avoided.
6. Stay away from by-products! If you don’t know what a by product is, it’s the “leftovers” after the best meat has been removed. This could include anything from chicken heads to intestines, etc. Very yucky thought! Many commercial puppy foods add these to their food………. So read your labels closely!

One of the first questions anyone asks when considering purchasing a dog or puppy is how big will it get? This is a very relevant and important question considering your need to ensure your puppy is cared for appropriately in your home.
If you are looking for a large or small sized dog and end up with an animal much larger than anticipated, this clearly is going to give you problems within the household. It is therefore, extremely important to understand the size of the dog you are thinking of getting and also importantly, the development stages of the dog within the first 18 months which is considered to be the primary growing period. Other considerations to take into account in terms of your puppy and eventual size are his or her exercise regime, its grooming requirements, and it’s likely personality or temperament.
Puppy weight estimates are most effectively understood by looking at both the dogs parents wherever possible. This will give you an extremely good idea by looking at the puppy’s family to ascertain what its end size and weight are likely to be. It is, however worth noting that mixed breed puppies are more difficult to assess in terms of size and growth. This is particularly relevant in situations where neither information around the size or the greed of the puppy’s parents is available this is not an uncommon situation and can be overcome with a little research.
Here are some important considerations to give you an idea as to what the puppy’s potential growth may be in the future;
1. Pay particular attention to the breed and the size and weight of parents
2. Look at the paws of the puppy, are they large? If so, it is likely that the puppy will develop into a much larger sized dog.
3. An unscientific formula which some believe is a good indication of eventual size is known as the ‘double’ formula, this, in essence, suggests that whatever the puppy weighs at around 14 weeks of age is doubled to provide an understanding of its final weight. This of course is not an exact science and the above methods should be used wherever possible.
So, what are the growth chart points of your puppy from 1 month to 18 months?
1 Month - puppy begins to wean and the teeth start to appear.
1 to 2 Months - your typical puppy begins cheering and playing with small items.
3 Months - your puppy enjoys chasing things in responding to his or her name.
4 Months - puppy begins to respond to simple commands and will heed when beckoned.
5 Months - Vaccinations and training regime to begin (Near adult height and weight for smaller breeds up to 25lbs)
6 Months- your puppy should fetch and understand simple commands and will be reaching sexual maturity for some small dogs.
7 Months - permanent teeth are cutting through which is a good time to schedule dental checkups with your veterinarian (near adult height and weight for medium breeds up to 55lbs)
9 Months - puppy training should be completed.
12 months - your dog will now be reaching adult height and weight for larger breeds over 55lbs.
18 months - your dog has now reached sexual maturity and the majority of large breeds over 50lbs - all dogs at 18 months will be approaching social maturity.
I hope the above puppy growth chart information and details around how to assess how big your dog will get has proven to be useful to you. Please visit my website for further dog training ideas and information.

After your puppy has learned the basics of dog training, you can now turn your practice sessions into fun. For instance, put your puppy in a Sit-Stay position, back off a foot or two, show him a toy and throw it to him. Try to avoid going for a catch that requires a super hero leap into the air. The idea is to have him actually catch it!
Put your puppy in a Sit-Stay position and let him watch you hide the toy under the edge of a couch. Make sure that he stays in this position for a moment more, perhaps as you wonder out loud “Where is Teddy?” Then give him the cue, “Okay - find Teddy!” If he doesn’t understand what to do, help him search for it, but let him discover where it is.
Stepping back to the “as” routine, you can teach your dog any trick that he can execute by himself just by giving that action a command. Puppies like to roll over onto their backs and squirm, especially on a comfy thick rug! Rotate this back-scratching into a trick by catching Rex as he starts and say, “Rex, roll over. Good boy.”
As your dog develops and grows, he’ll understand your language more frequently and you’ll be able to use words that have great influence as tricks. For instance, rather than saying “roll over,” say, “Rex, can you do your rollover exercises?” to bring on a squirming, leg-flailing routine that is worthy of praise. For the beginning, keep it simple as possible.
When Rex has finally gotten to the stage of being able to hold a still Sit-Stay, you can add a new trick. Balance a dog biscuit on top of his nose as simply say, “On trust.” If your dog is wiggling his head you might have to hold his head still the first few tries. When Rex has held it for a second, give him the release signal (”Okay” or “Take it”) as you softly, yet fast, lift his chin up, which will throw the biscuit into the air so he can actually catch the biscuit.
Children and pups love to play hide & seek, but any person can get in on the game. Puppies seek by scent, so at the beginning kneel down to be closer your dog’s level. Place Rex in a Sit-Stay and let him see you hide, kneel down and then call out “Okay!” Make certain he finds you even if it means you must call out to Rex a few times. Make a huge deal of it when he does find you - and then play the game over again. Just don’t make it more difficult until he is able to find you right away at the first level.
Reward your puppy often with a little treat and make finding you the most exhilarating part of the game. This means you will advance slowly from hiding where he can see you, to hiding in another section of the home and sooner or later the back of a wardrobe closet where your scent will be hidden. Remember, your dog won’t be interested in playing if it isn’t fun, so make certain he does find you each time you play.
Shaking hands with your dog is fun and easy to teach. Simply touch the toes and many dogs will raise that paw. Lift it with ease and say, “Shake hands” or “Give me a paw” as he gives it to you. When that has been achieved, you can develop this into a paw raised higher, and without shaking it, say, “Wave goodbye!” This is great for later on; a friendly dog handshake is fine for the moment. The reverse of “Off for jumping up is two paws raised in a jump-up welcome, only on a command of “High-5!”

Most people who have pets at home actually get so much attached to them that they are considered more of a family member than just a mere pet. For once, most dog owners actually treat their dogs very well from the time that it is still a puppy until they grow with them. For others, they go beyond the basic care of their pets and they even take pictures of their pets and compile them in an album so they could do something to preserve the memories of their pets and share their joys even to the next generation.
Taking puppy pictures is something that you might have also considered in the past. Just imagine the joy of having a compiled album where you can see your pet, capture your happy moments with them and watch their growth. If that sparks your interest and that makes you want to start one, then continue reading this article since this can be helpful for those who may want to start an album filled with puppy pictures.
First, you have to keep in mind that it isn’t really that difficult to take puppy pictures. You just have to familiarize yourself with their routine and behavior. For example, what does your pet do when they are hungry? What do they do to grab your attention? What is their favorite toy? How do they react to strangers? When you know the answer to all of those questions in advance, you can be sure that you will be prepared to take their puppy pictures when an opportunity for it arises. It is always fun to take their pictures as they go about their daily routines and even to capture their funny habits on pictures sometimes. Knowing their behavior and routine makes you anticipate their moves really. Take puppy pictures of your pet while they sleep, run, play, eat and many other activities.
Aside from that, you also have to be aware that you have to give some attention as well when it comes to the technical aspects of handling and operating a camera. Get the proper settings ready so you could have quality results in the end. It is a good thing to use a typical point and shoot digital camera since you won’t have to worry about bad shots you have taken since you can always delete them. With that, you can choose the best puppy pictures and throw away those that you think you won’t need anymore. You may also keep those puppy pictures that aren’t the best shots but still looks appealing enough for safe-keeping and put it elsewhere.
Now while there are those types of people who would want to include their family pictures in their family albums, there are also those who prefer having an album that will exclusively have their puppy pictures. In the end, it is all a matter of personal choice and it is up to you to decide. Either which of the choices you choose, it is indeed important to have those puppy pictures taken and preserved so you could somehow keep the memory of the pets you love.

If you want a boxer puppy, you can purchase one from a reputable dealer, local pet stores and even common breeders. However, using a trustworthy dealer is wise because they are proverbial with selective breeding, know about pedigrees varieties and the boxer character traits. Boxer dogs are increasingly getting popular so those who have little knowledge about them are involving themselves in the breeding process. Unfortunately, those without any knowledge have no idea the likely problems that come from breeding.
Boxer breeders are usually chosen over other places to buy the dogs because they have a familiarity of all breeds and their troubles. However, the breeders look for ways to change those negativities. If you find a Kennel Club breeder, the chances of finding a reputable breeder are good. Still, there are some that are not. Breeders are genuinely concerned about the dogs. You should know that most pet stores and common breeders do not give assurances or guarantees to the health of the boxer puppy.
Until a boxer puppy reaches 21 days of life, they won’t do much more than sleep, eat and play. You probably already know that boxers are extremely loving. While this may be, they still need to be trained for obedience so it can grow up to be compliant, sociable grown-up dog. It is best to teach the dogs while they are young so it can be all you want it to be when it gets older.
Boxer dogs can follow the trouble-free instructions of “sit” and “come” especially when the puppy is still quite young. When you give them these commands early on, you make it easier on yourself to discipline it and form an everlasting bond. There are common guidelines and fundamental rules that should be followed so your boxer will learn all you need it to learn much faster. You also want to avoid confusing the animal. Remember that timing is everything. If you give a command, the puppy needs to know that the response should be immediate and not made later on.
Any training and quality time you give your boxer puppy it will remember. When you are training your puppy, you want to remain unswerving. Your puppy will not always obey your commands (even though it should), yet you should not chastise it if it does not. If you can, bribery in the forms of treats and rewards should be used when your pup does obey your command. When the puppy follows your command, give it some praise too. Your goal is to move forward with the commands so do not use any negative techniques that make any sort of circumstances worse. As your puppy gets older, you should add to his obedience training.
If you want a positive response, you should know that dogs have a predisposition to follow the leader. If you want your puppy to listen to you, be the leader it follows. Be sure to stay relaxed so your boxer will be confident and self-confident later on. Use short commands with your puppy and try to use the same tone of voice. If your training is straightforward, it will go much smoother.

It is so embarrassing when your puppy begins madly humping people’s legs, you, other animals in your home, and just about anything else that incites your puppy into humping. Have you ever wondered why your puppy wants to hump things like a couch cushion or a plush toy? For your convenience, this article explains why puppies hump and provides you with practical advice on how to teach your puppy to stop humping and biting your leg.
o Your puppy is becoming a teenager so to speak, with surging sexual hormones, which causes your puppy to want to mimic adult dog mating behavior. Admonish your puppy sharply to stop his humping and biting as soon as he begins.
o Neutering your puppy at six-months of age or the age your pets veterinarian recommends, can stop a problem with humping from ever developing in the first place with very few exceptions.
o Puppies humping behavior is not always sexual in nature. A puppy wishing to assert his dominance over those he considers his subordinates will also hump and bite. Reassert yourself as the dominate member of your pack family with command and other training as well as teaching your puppy to stop humping and biting by doing so. A good trick to try is to have a noisemaker or small handheld alarm that you activate to produce noise to startle your puppy enough that he will no longer wish to hump or bite your leg.
o Engaging your puppy in a fun activity like fetching a toy as soon as he shows an interest in humping your leg can stop him from humping and biting. It is quite easy to draw a puppy’s attention away from negative behaviors and direct him towards acceptable behaviors. Do it before bad behaviors become permanent habits for your puppy.
An overly anxious puppy may react by humping and biting your leg. Working to help your puppy to relax can help stop this unwanted behavior.

Puppy dog training for obedience is a topic close to the heart of dog lovers. Now, getting a new puppy in the house can be as joyous as having a new baby at home. It brings much excitement to everyone especially the kids. But you need to make sure that buying the puppy is not a decision made in haste or at the spur of the moment. Dogs are living creatures and not just gifts that need no maintenance. Though a little puppy can bring so much laughter and happiness, they do require a great deal of training and when that happens, it is not a fun thing to do. Expect work if you want to train puppy dog well.
Dogs are like human beings. They too have temperament as well. Surprised? A puppy’s temperament depends on their birth place and his/her breed. So pay a bit of attention here about different breeds and their personalities in order to know how to train your dog puppy correctly. Rottweilers, bull dogs, boxers and German shepherds are guard dogs and they are born with natural instincts to love and protect their human companions. Gun dogs, pointer and Labradors are born and reared as hunting dogs. Because of their background, they are naturally energetic.
Bearded and border collies, on the other hand, being herding dogs are bred and reared on farmland, and are rather active and curious about their surroundings. They are known to love moving around and don’t sit still well. You have to be a little careful when you bring them to live in cities as they may be anxious and a bit scared and nervous since they are not used to the modern environment.
Training dog puppy needs time. But do not be unduly worried as it often takes a couple of weeks before it learns dog obedience. What you need is a little bit of patience and the amount of effort you put into it. One piece of good news is you do not have to spend hours to train dog puppies as it only takes a few minutes each day over a few times. That’s all it takes.
The very first task to train dog puppy is its obedience in simple commands like come, sit, heel, stay and fetch. These are easy to follow and most puppies are able to learn that quite fast. As they grow older and bigger, you can move on to include more advanced commands like rolling over, pawing and even play dead. One thing good about training dog puppies is they are very open towards learning. They are like blank pieces of paper ready to be written on. So training a puppy dog can be quite a fun experience especially when it starts responding to you.
Like kids, what they learn in their initial growing up months would be engrained in their memories. The puppy dog training for obedience would also shape their behaviors later. All it takes is a simple rule, stick with the few minutes per session routine and keep repeating as a reminder.
Puppy dog training for obedience is so important as untrained puppies can be rather mischievous. Since they are young, during their teething stage, they develop a natural chewing behavior. This can be quite damaging for your furniture as the holes they leave can be numerous in numbers. It is good to therefore start training dog puppies early so that they learn to differentiate what is wrong and what is right behavior.
Dog owners may resort to using dog training devices or products to aid puppy dog training but this is really not that essential. A little bit more of practicing and repeating the simple commands everyday would go a long way. The whole puppy dog training takes approximately a few months. Yes it may seem tough but the rewards would be great. At the end of the training, your puppy would grow up to be a loving and obedient dog that makes a great companion.
If you are keen to find out the specific commands to execute to properly teach and train your puppy, find out from my dog obedience website where you can learn some quick and effective dog obedience training techniques to train your puppy dog.

If you have a new puppy, you understand the frustration of finding pee on the carpet in your house. Just when you think your new puppy understand that they should pee outside, you find another wet reminder that your puppy doesn’t understand.
What does it take to break your puppy of the habit of peeing inside?
The truth is, the training routine for housebreaking your puppy is a team effort. The most effective method to housebreak your puppy is to establish a standard routine for you and your puppy. Just like resolutions in the new year, it’s easy to start a routine and quickly watch it die. Establishing and maintaining a routine with your puppy is the most important factor in getting your puppy potty trained. It is also important to get your entire family to use the same exact routine so your puppy doesn’t get confused.
Routine potty trips outside should include:
First thing in the morning Right before bed time Right after every nap A few minutes after each meal
It is easy to start a routine, but sticking with it for several weeks is the challenge. This is where most housetraining efforts fail. It takes anywhere from 15 to 30 days of repetitive action to make a routine a habit. Once the action of taking your new puppy outside to potty, your routine will become a habit. The best part is - once it becomes a habit for your puppy, they will let you know when it’s time to go out. That’s the holy grail of potty training your puppy.
Remember to always praise and reward your puppy when he uses the potty outside. They will relate that to a pleasurable memory because they get attention (which they love) or they get a treat (which they really love). Incorporating praise and treats will help to establish the proper behavior in your puppy and make potty training much easier.

Puppy training pads are well known by many puppy owners, some owners don’t prefer them and others couldn’t imagine living without them, The best way to get your dog to use the training pads, you want him or her to use so bad, is with time and patience. After a week or so of trying to teach them, they will begin to pick up the idea you are stressing.
Dog’s and puppies both can understand body language very well, your dog can read you especially when your getting angry with them. Although some dogs just will never understand and rather then doing there duty on the puppy pads they decide to tear it up or eat it, Pug’s especially.
There are a number of different puppy training pad products available online and off, the most common name brands are, Pet Gold, Clean Go and Out, there are many others as well and while some don’t do as good of a job as the more popular name brands do.
The most common problems with puppy training pads are tracking problems, and leaking issue’s. Most people get overwhelmed with the problem or get upset and give up with them all together. Bringing home a new puppy is an exciting experience! The puppy is excited, you are excited, but what about your older dog? You remember, the one who has been an only dog for years. It can be done and fairly effortlessly at that.
Dogs, for all their domesticity, still have a pack mentality. You, of course, are the alpha, or head dog. Your older dog will be the beta, or second in command. When bringing a new dog into the pack, your established dog may feel threatened. Be mindful of this. While you do want your newest addition to feel loved and welcomed, you also want your older dog to know that it is still loved very much and its position in the household is secure. There are a variety of things you may do to make this transition from a one dog to a two dog home go smoothly.
Go slowly! This is a brand new place for your puppy and a new situation for your older dog. Don’t rush them into any kind of relationship. Let the puppy explore. Allow them to get acquainted. I would advise here, to stay in close proximity when the dogs are just getting to know each other. Sometimes fights do break out and you won’t want either dog injured.
Spend quality time with each dog separately. This allows you to bond with your puppy and also shows your older dog that it is still an important part of your life. A caution here, don’t spend all of your time with them in separate situations. This may breed jealousy and ill will between dogs.
Play is important. Play with your dogs separately and also have playtime together. Make sure they have plenty of toys and chew toys. Once they begin having fun, it won’t be long until they are playing together and you are the one left out!
Reward good behavior. As mentioned, this is a new situation for both dogs. Reward them with playtime or treats so that they know that they are moving in the right direction.
This all may sound like a lot of work, but it truly isn’t. Once your dogs develop a relationship, your diligence will be awarded with twice the love!
